Actually, I think Dell is right, however I often use Permatex (brush-on in a small tin) between the cover and the gasket, but NOT between the gasket and the machined surface on the engine. Use the type that stays soft and pliable, not the hardening type. This eliminates up to 50% of the potential leaks yet the cover can still be taken off easily. Some guys will recommend silicon, personally I can't stand working with or looking at that stuff. The warpage of the cover that Del mentioned is a critical factor for sure.
