There are many different formulations which are used varying from one third petrol and two thirds kerosene (28 second Redwood)to almost all kerosene, with other additions as well. Personally I have found my Oliver 90 able to burn straight kerosene, but it eventually 'spiders' across one spark plug when only on very light load - ticking over, at say fast idle, at a show. My usual formula is three and a half kerosene + one petrol (gasoline for our American friends)+ one half of diesel(35 second gas oil). The person who gave me this formulation said the diesel just helped with giving it that little bit of lubrication that the engine might benefit from and also a smell similar to TVO. In Britain any recipe which avoids paying huge amounts of excise duty for our fuel is beneficial - at current prices of about £0.72 per litre (nearly $4 a US gallon?) and this is well down at the moment. One must also consider valve seat material and compression ratios and whether the engine runs without undue stress on any particular recipe. It is often just comes down to a matter of choice. In Britain, where Tractor Vapourising Oil was popular in the fifties, TVO can be purchased from a few specialist suppliers, but I find it a trifle expensive when my tractor doesn't seem to mind feeding on what I give it.

After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
