I would get a good battery or a set of booster cables before I would use a crank as a back up. When I was about 14 year old I stalled a mh 44 while cutting hay. The battery would not start it and I was miles from home. So I tried cranking it to get it started. Well it back fired and just about killed my wrist. If you do a search a lot of fellows have described the proper way to crank a engine. Personally I still feel the pain when I think about cranking a tractor.
