Depends on what undersize is. Bearings are commonly available in standard (original), 10,20, and 30/1,000ths under. Is you source claiming 40 under or more? THat'd make me a little nervous about weakening the crank. I think what the shop is telling you is that the crank is too far worn to even take the 30 unders, the thickest generally available. I suspect they don't have the ability to do the work, but they might refer you to a shop that can weld metal (spray welding? I think they call it)onto the crank and then turn it down to specs. I was fortunate mine just nneded turning, but in checking out the process, I got the impression it was a pretty reliable fix. Where are you located?
