I looked in the "Peterson Field Guide for Insects" There are 3300 North American Types of Bees. Many have the ability to Sting. This is a defense.Usually of the Queen. All have jaws or mandibles. These are used to feed or build nests for the queen to lay eggs of if not a social group of bees to build thier own nest for eggs. Nothing is mentioned about Bees biting they sting. although I have see places where the bee sting is refered to as a bee bite which I have found nothing to support bee bites.
