I work on tractors and other equipment for a living. I use so little silicone that I don't even keep a tube for myself, I borrow a squirt from one of the other guys for the few places I use it. I am a big fan of the anaerobic gasket eliminators/sealers from Loctite such as 515 and 518. I use them with and without gaskets, and have very good results. Any sealing surface has to be CLEAN, CLEAN! Silicone can help non-doweled flanges work and cause leaks. New Holland and Kubota have gone away from using silicone to seal some housings for that reason.
