Funny you should ask about the diamond/corn thing, we just studied it in a microeconomics class I am taking at the local community college. Economists call it the diamond-water paradox, and it discusses how some things with little practical utility like a diamond have more value than some things with large practical utility value (like water). Of course, it comes down to supply and demand. If you were starving to death, you would probably trade all the diamonds in the world for a bushel of corn.
