Tractors did not need to be large to be gas hogs. I had a Farmall 300 gas; back in early sixties, I used that tractor on a New Holland 460, 9 foot mower conditioner. It would regularly burn 3 gal. cdn. per hour. In late sixties I purchased a Farmall 656D and on the same mower conditioner on same farmland it was just marginally over 1 gal. cdn. per hour. The 656 was more than enough power for the job. 300 would break 3-4 shear bolts per day. 656 never broke a shear bolt on that mower conditioner to 1976
