I used to be in the new farm machery biz. The only difference between live pto and independant pto is the name, it had no technical significance. Several manufacturers used both terms interchangeably. IH, JD et al referred to their PTOs as live, even though they didnt use a two stage clutch on most of their tractors, while MF sometimes called their two stage system as independant. It is only recently that some import companies have started to differentiate somewhat on some of their literature, but I suspect this has more to do with translation than actual mechanical practice. As to preference, a live pto that doesn't involve a two stage clutch arrangement is superior in every respect.
