The Qjet that came with the 454 that I rebuilt had an external choke. It never did work quite right and I finally got tired of fighting it. Also, the tension on the air valve spring for the secondary has to be just so or it'll open too quick and bog the engine. I wound up springing for a Holley 4075 spreadbore, which bolts right on. So far it works fine. Starts good and plenty smooth in going from cruise to acceleration. I imagine that a rebuilt Qjet would cost about the same..around $300. The integral choke Qjet that was on my 350 smallblock worked fine for years. The orings on the fuel transfer tube on our 4180 square flange on our '87 F250 leaked once and that was a mess until we got that squared away. The 4075 has the same setup. Both carbs have their pluses and minuses.
