i would have to agree with "old timer", with a twist. if you really want to farm the ground, i would suggest that you rent it out as suggested by "old timer". the twist part is that you might make an arrangement with your renter that he allow you to help him with the field work. what you arrive at as far as compensation for your labor (if anything) is between you and your renter. while you are helping him, you will be learning some of the things that you'll need to know. he can teach you as you work together. you won't learn everything the first years, but if you pay attention and ask questions as you go, you can learn a vast amount in a few years. you will know when it's time to go on your own, and i guarantee it won't be 1 or 2 years. you have to know what to plant, when to plant, how to plant, how to grow it, when to harvest, and the big one-how to market your crop. i did this type arrangement 25 years ago with hogs, and was glad i did. a good place to start is (forgive me) talk to your local banker. tell him your intentions and he can steer you to a reputable farmer. also, this way you are getting paid to do what you want to do- farm granpa's farm, with no financial risk, and you don't have to shell out your cash for equipment yet. this worked for me.
