Reversing the tread acts like a fuse, they start to spin before they get so mired that they can't back out. This does cause them to miss some spots that they could move through. Back in the seventies when prices were good, many cutters in our area would have the big New Holland or JD combines and would have one smaller Gleaner. They would send the Gleaner through the wet spots and pull it out with the NHs or JDs if it got stuck.
