Most State Cops & DOT officers I've seen could care less about stopping an over-loaded 1/2 ton pickup.... as long as it has the license and axles to carry the weight... and the limits are the same as semi's use.... in IL, WI, IND, MICH, IA, MS, etc. that I used to drive in it was 12,000# on the steering axle, 20,000# on any other single axle and 34,000# on a set of tandems. 6-cyl F-150 or T-2000 KW pulling the trailer didn't matter. I don't recommend towing 6000+# with a truck rated to pull 3500#. (I put over 185,000 miles on 6-cyl. F-150 4X4's) but You could do it if You had to. The trailer Your towing will weigh more than the towing vehicle...., which is a Very Bad thing in an emergency situation. The trailer will have more control of the vehicle than You will.
