G Taylor: While it is true that shields help, they may also give a false sence of security so that people may feel it is OK to wander around the machine while it is running. Having a shield on some rotating parts may help but stopping the machine is a lot safer for most users. There are still other moving, non rotating parts, that kill or injure as well. Your comments about SEEING a major injury IN PERSON may be the best long term safety item. In other words.."FEAR" of getting hurt is best. When I was about 5 years old, I almost got my hand wrapped around a Farmall B PTO. I can still see that event crystal clear in my mind of my hand being pulled by twine towards the spinning shaft. The twine let go a couple inches away from the shaft. I had the hair on the back of my neck standing up straight. I never felt FEAR like that befor and it was a super good lesson that lasted through all of my macho teenage years. R.
