Doug,
When I read the responses to your first post rollover was on my mind. The main keyword you used was mountain. Compact tractors are somewhat tall for their width at least in the 30 hp range. Think more in terms of what the highway departments and power companies’ use for right of way maintenance. The leaders in that market were Ford, John Deere and IH, all offered utility or special utility versions of their tractors. Since you do not mention any needs of a row-crop tractor a fixed front axle and low profile rear tires would be no problem. I would not recommend this to someone for a farming tractor, but in your case you might consider a used highway department tractor if money is an issue. I would be very careful and rather selective before purchasing. Most are in the 55 to 75 HP range and have heavier front axles and wider lower profile tires. If buying new I would look at an AGCO or John Deere product. The dealer can spec out a tractor according to your needs. It is less expensive to buy what you need than to take something else and try to make it what you need. Loaders are wonderful tools, but can be very dangerous on slopes whether the bucket is loaded or not. If you need a loader for some tasks make sure it is easily detached when not needed. If you have little knowledge or experience with tractors the working relationship with your dealer will be as important as any other feature of your tractor. I traditionally have liked IH products (or descendents of), but fear the uncertainty since their purchase by Fiat. The dealer we have done business with for over 28 years told me a month ago that he can not even order a new 50 to 70 hp tractor at the moment and the new ones will all be outgrowths of the Fiat lines with no connection to the former IH products. I have IH and MF, but my last purchase was JD due to market realities. One thing you did not specify is your budget, this may limit your choices or fulfill your fantasies.

Today's Featured Article - Talk of the Town: How to Remove a Broken Bolt - by Staff. Another neat discussion from the Tractor Talk Discussion Forum. The discussion started out with the following post: "I have an aluminum steering gear housing with a bolt broken off in it. The bolt is about a 3/8" x 1 1/2" bolt. I've already drilled the center of the bolt out with about 7/64" drill bit the entire length of the bolt. Only one end of the bolt is visible. I tried to use an easy out but it wasn't budging and I didn't want t ... [Read Article]
