If the breather is the only other outlet to the atmosphere, then any pressure build up in the crankcase - and there is bound to be, due to piston blow-by or just plain getting hot - will blow back past the piston on the induction stroke (particularly on a gas engine)taking oil spray with it. It could also dissipate through valve guides. If it couldn't all get out via these routes it would probably blow a seal- front or rear crank and take oil that way. That's simply why they have a breather. Also it has probably stopped exhausting blue smoke. All ways round you must be plain happy with your simple 'repair'. Have fun,regards, RAB
