I think you still run a 50% risk of getting a bad one.there are still way too many of these engines being replaced at ridiculusly low mileage.A neighbor of mine has a '99,3500 tow-truck.the first engine was replaced at 40000km(thats about 25000miles).If you baby them they might last,but for work my vote goes to the 7,3 and cummins.My brother-in-law has a 86 with a 6,9;bought it used with 300000km on a rebuild,then he put another400000km on it.It still runs as a bushtruck.
