Hi Karl; my answers to your questions (in reverse order). 1) It's been my experience that people pay attention to what interests them. I searched Safety in the archives and got 12,314 hits. I think safety issues interest many; I guess all I'm wondering is if those posts should be untangled from the site as a whole, and consolidated in one forum (much like all the various posts on restoration and painting were consolidated into those two, newer forums. My opinion (not that you asked for it) is that a specific safety forum would fly reasonably well. 2) I'm not sure if people would go to it or not. What I do believe is that there is little, if any harm in finding out the answer to that question by beginning a forum on safety. If the new forum sparks interest (and responses), continue it, if it garners little interest, simply discontinue it. 3) Some examples of threads on safety issues could be: - electrical safety (6/12 volt systems,boosting etc. - hydraulic capacities - operating machinery on a slope - plowing and road traffic - safe hydraulic practices - bush hog operation - post hole digging (and what happens when you hit a large, underground obstruction) - poison fumes protection - handling toxic substances - towing safety - logging with tractors - retro-fitting ROPS - fuel system leakage - changing large tires - boiler restoration - boiler operation - complying with local, state(provincial), and federal laws and regulations - discussing the need for laws and regulations not on the books, )or the idiocy of some already in place). - insuring valuable collections (or just insuring a working, utility machine) - any one of a number of "this happened to me" type stories: as in "I'm a pretty smart, careful guy, but I did this dumb thing, this is what it cost me; learn from my mistake if you will" posts. 4) I'm not sure what sort of topics would be posted, but one can see what types of safety- related topics have interested us in the past -- and there appears to be no shortage of either topics, or folks to discuss them. Also, personally speaking, I'd be interested to hear simple stories from people. I believe there is much to be learned from the experiences of others. (I also have [probably perverse] curiousity about whether other guys have done things as dumb as I have in the past.) I do think there may be an odd kind of truth in the saying "if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger". Finally, I think asking Kim's opinion is more than worthwhile. Her angle (and not inconsiderable experience) allows her insight we do not have, regardless of our intentions or intelligence. I would consider any input from her valuable, and I, for one, would listen closely to what she has to say on the subject. Bottom line for me personally Karl, is this: I don't believe a safety forum can do much harm, and it may possibly turn out to be a worthwhile forum. I would say if the forum flies, all the better for us; if it's dead in the water, simply discontinue the thing. No harm done. To put it another way; it's a relatively small investment for what could be a significant return. If we get no return; we'll stop investing. Anyway, just a few of my thoughts, back to you.
