Bill the last few that I installed had a pendulum inside them that when you applied the brakes on the towing vehicle the pendulum would swing forward & apply the brakes on the trailer. The angle you set the control box made a big difference in how well they worked. If you had the front pointing down to much they would apply to easy. They worked pretty good as long as you had about the same load on the trailer but if you set them to stop a loaded trailer when it was empty every time you touched the brake pedal the trailer wheels would lock up so you wound up adjusting it every time the weight of the load changed. This was in the late 80 & early 90. I don't know if they are still using that type or not now days

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet).
