Bill, Its late so it will be a short explanation. There are two types that are most often seen these days. First is the timer controlled activated by the brakelight switch on the tow vehicle. You set one pot for the brake current and the other pot for the time delay after you have touched your brake pedal. The second is and inertial controller. A pendulum activates the circuit when you start to brake with the tow vehicle. The current to the trailer brakes is proportional to the pendulum travel. It is a little like the electronic equivalent of surge brakes. Both units will normally have a manual activation bar where the old types had a knob you pushed to the side. The new types were required when anti-lock brakes came on the scene. You can still use the hydraulic activated systems with older vehicles. I have one of each that I need to install now. It will be my first use of the inertial, it is a Tekonsha 9055. Others have posted favorably on it, it will handle up to 4 axles.
