My Diesel 454 is my favorite little tractor. The problems: Internal clutch for PTO wears and will slip. If that is the only thing wrong, it isn't too bad to fix, 5 gal of tranny fluisd, and a clutch plate kit will do it for under $200. BUT if it is slipping because of a poor hydraulic pump, then you've got a problem. Dealer prices out teh pump in the $1000 range. I have found an aftermarket one for Probably 1/3 that but don't kinow how good they are. If the power steering is weak suspect the hydraulic pump. Also the parking brake is a royal pain to fix, I am told. Easy to leave on, and it's internal stuff to fix. Check the brakes, make sure the left and right brake both work. MIne was a huge step up from my 600 Ford. I do a lot of driveway repairing, gravel work, anmd I love it. I think pricewise it does sound a litle high. IF it is a dealer make him put it on a dyno and prove the PTO system is solid to your satisfaction. If it is a private party , find a large field and go bush hogging, or find some other way to put the PTO to some serious work. GOod luck, hope it's a good one!
