The vortec engines are bad for the intake gasket leaking antifreeze at the rear of the engine. Its no big thing, a new gasket will fix it as will a bottle of Bars Leak (thats what I used over 50,000 miles ago and still no leaks). As for the motor slap, I've owned two and both slap when first cranked. The first now has over 200,000 and the second over 120,000 miles and still slapping. When I bought the first one I took it back to the dealership and the factory rep was there. His story was that the newer engines were put up with greater clearances in order to extend the life of the engine and it must work. How many engines from the sixties have you seen with over 200,000 on it and the valve covers never been off?

I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
