I think I know what you have, but I don't know the proper name- we just call it "sweetgrass", and I think it has "sweet" somewhere in the name (extension service identified it once for me several years ago). It's the one grass that seems to dominate on clay ground that's low in fertility in western Washington. The head looks like a miniature Canary grass head, and its about the only grass that will only be knee high at maturity despite the field not having been cut for 4 years. I had a lot of it in one field I cut for free (ag in our area is so "down" that I haven't paid for a hayfield for years- people just want it cut to reduce fire danger. We can thank the "planners" who force rural folks to have 5 acres or more, even if they don't want it and can't care for it). I put chicken manure on the field, got a doubling in yield, and the sweetgrass was crowded out by fescue and orchardgrass.
