I never thought the MD's and WD6's were as bad as the 9's for cracking heads and a lot of that can be avoided by properly running down the engine before you shut it off. Admitedly there is somewhat of a problem here but there were also a lot of people who ran these tractors for many years without a problem. It seems to me in many cases this problem appeared more as the tractors got older and were treated like old tractors also. Regarding the starting system it is more complex than the Oliver 88 but is not particularly troublesome or expensive to repair. The major expense would only possibly pertain to the magneto. If your magneto is good the rest of the gas starting system is basically good for years and years. The linkages need to be properly set up make sure they are not binding from lack of use. Once set the system requires very little maintenance.
