Most of the horse people around here want alfalfa hay from what I have seen. It has a lot higher feed value and they don't have to feed as much of it. You can usually get about $2.00 a bale. Growing alfalfa takes a little bit more attention to the soil than a lot of other types of hay, at least in my area (SE Ohio). It requires a good soil PH (aka a lot of lime) and phosphoric acid (I think) and pot ash. I have been having pretty good luck with using lime and 0-11-44 fertilizer. I am by no stretch of the imagination an expert, but I hope that helps.
