Does the pinion have a + or - number stamped on the gear end? And does your old, trashed, pinion have a simular number stamped on it? For the past years, manufactures have been measuring their pinions for depth, to a standard, and noting the differance with the + or - number. This standard assumes a specific shim depth, and the + or - numbers are the deviation from that standard. If your old, trashed, pinion has a +3 stamped on it, indicates 0.003" shim was added to the "standard" shim pack. If your new pinion has -4 stamped on it, indicates 0.004" shim was removed from the "standard" shim pack. When replacing the above referanced example, one would remove 0.007" of shim from your existing shim pack which would place the pinion depth at the correct location. This system was put in place due to the requirement to press on the inner bearing, with the shims between said bearing, and the pinion gear. No easy way to remove the bearing to adjust the shims. Also, as stated below, the older Motors Manuals give instructions on seting up a ring and pinion. Just read your pattern in the Prussion Blue, and that pattern will tell you what to move, and about how much. Sorry its so long. Hope this helps. Have fun. First time is a bugger. After that its easy. Peter B.

Amana Colonies served as a respite where we ate a family style lunch that sustained us with more food than could reasonably fit into our ample physiques. The show at Ankeny
