Peter, I recently replaced the ring and pinion in my pickup, and I don't imagine that your 1010 is that much different. I bought the parts at a shop that specializes in drive trains, and when I asked them about pinion depth they told me to just use my old shims. The pinion depth gage is primarily to get the pinion depth "in the ballpark" so that you can set the backlash and be reasonably close to where you need to be. You certainly would need it if you were setting up a new housing, but not your existing one. In my case, I used the old pinion shims. After I set up the backlash with a dial indicator, the pattern was right on the money.
