Actually EBAY has software that checks for shill bids. You cannot get away with a friend bidding on your auctions and visa versa for very long. I had a friend that did that trying to get a car up to his minimum (he didn't seem to understand this was wrong..)and both he and his pal lost Ebay priveleges for several months. Most private auctions are for "adult " items or on occasion a seller who has had a major feedback problem will choose to go private to prevent former disgruntled customers from informing his customers about that. There was a huge stink about a certain drum maker on EBAY a few months back, and anyone who searched his name up on the internet would find a huge discussion thread from all his dissatified customers on a certain drummers site. This particular seller chose to go private with his auctions for a while, but the damage had been done. I guess there might be good reasons to have a private auction, but I cannot think of any private auctions I'd want to participate in.
