One more little tip to add to T_bones post. Most people crank the engine over when checking for spark. That's not always easy if your also holding the wire. Not to mention that if your battery is not up to snuff , cranking the engine runs the battery down. Here's what to do; Turn the engine over by hand until the points are closed. Turn ignition on. Now hold your coil wire 1/4" away from grounding point. Open and close the points by hand. You get the same results. Your not turning the starter , to turn the engine , to turn the rotor shaft , to open and close the points. NOTE: you can stick a piece of cardboard(match flap)between the points until ready to test , if your affraid of burning the points.
