Row crop tractors were designed to cultivate Row Crops such as corn, sugar beets, beans, potatoes, onions, etc. The rear wheels are larger in diameter than those on the equivalent standard models so the crops could pass under them. In some cases offset gear cases were used to provide clearance. For some specialized tractors there were chain driven offsets of up to 4 or f5 feet. Generally the rear tread width was adjustable, On the John Deere B from a minimum of 42 inches to a maximum of 72 inches or so. In most cases adjustement was by sliding the wheels on an extended axle. Some tractors also used adjustable wheels. In most cases the tread setting would be twice the row width but on occasion might be as wide as 4 rows (on tractors with mounted sugar beet diggers for instance) or a single row like the IH Cubs. Tricycle front wheels were either dual inclined outwards so the tread fit between a row, or single tire. Wide front ends were offered on most makes which were adjustable to match the rear axle tread, although again this was subject to wide variability.
