There is not much problem here. Doing the unknown for the first time can be rather overwhelming especially when dealing with the government ( US or Canada). Since you are going from Canada to the US the Canadian Customs won't be too interested but the US Customs will have some requirements. It used to be that the US Customs required use of a broker on any shipment valued at $1,200.00US or more. This number may have changed. The best thing to do is to call a broker and ask what is required and what the cost will be. Most brokers have offices at most major ports of entry and can take care of the paperwork in about a half hour. You can have the paperwork ready for you at the border if you give your broker the information ahead of time. The necessary information is Make, Model and Serial Number of tractor, copy of invoice (or receipt), and where the tractor was manufactured (given on serial number tag). If the tractor was made in either the US or Canada there is NO duty. However, if the tractor was manufactured in Canada there will be a small charge for verification, I don't think this verification amounts to anything but they charge you $15-$20. The brokerage charges should be in the area of $35.00 to possibly $50.00. A couple of good brokers to call would be Norman G. Jensen in Pembina, ND or H.A.&J.L.Wood, Inc. also of Pembina, ND. This may not be the port you are using but I know that these brokers will help you. This is not a complicated thing and a good learning experience. You may want to do it again.
