I have cat tails around my ponds. The way i deal with them, is to keep them mowed down with a sickle mower. If you keep mowing them down a couple times a year, it really knocks them back by the end of the second year. That won't get rid of them, but sure controls them. My buddy burns his off in the winter.
In my field, i brush hog the area once or twice a year, and there's no visible cat tails there any more.
I started doing this long time ago, because i was afraid some one would see the cat tails and declare the area "wet lands". I've noticed that since "ozone Al" is out of the picture, this has been less of a problem!
