A perennial question, so I might as well jump in early.. Convention is that 6-volt is positive ground with a generator, 12 is negative ground with an alternator. Then the exceptions begin. If it has a 6-volt (three cells) battery and a generator, chances are it should be positive ground. BUT it's not uncommon for a seller to throw any old battery on, and often a 12 onto a 6-volt machine, just to have one there. An alternator would be a better sign that it's been converted to 12 and the negative ground would MOST likely be right. Look around in the archives (here and the Farmall board) and you'll find some discussions of this, with some pretty scary examples of how some of these old tractors have been cobbled together. If you want the tractor and it is in otherwise good shape, I wouldn't let the question get in my way. You can buy it and with a little testing, determine what's there and for relatively little in parts, get it squared away. My 2 cents. Scotty
