I'm a carpenter. Probably the best thing I ever did was to go out on my own. Was working for a guy who deceided to call it quits and retire. Started looking around for another job but just couldn't see myself working my butt off on a crew where the foreman was 15 years younger than I was. So I took the plunge. Started working for family, friends and neighbors and things just went from there. I've never advertised. Everything comes from referrals. That was over 10 years ago and I aint missed a meal yet. I don't do big stuff. Just remodel. Mostly kitchens and bathrooms. There are always people looking for a good, honest tradesman. Do good quality work. Follow through on comebacks and complaints. Sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and fix something again even though it wasn't your fault. It'll take a while to find your niche but when you do you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Good luck to you.
