You're close Dave! The condenser absorbs the voltage spike created by the coil primary when the points OPEN and interrupt primary current flow. Results in a faster collapse of the magnetic field inside the coil which in turn creates a higher voltage output at the secondary (hence a hotter spark). This also reduces arcing at the points as they open.
