One old trick is to remove the spark plug and feed 1/4" rope into the cylinder until it is full. Turn the engine to push the rope up and fill the combustion chamber. Then you can take the keepers and spring off the valve without it falling if it should come loose. If you begin tapping with the spring on, it could just keep going down and never get loose enough to pop up, then you have a problem. This way you can at least grab the stem and pull up on it. Not necessary for all of them, but can help if you have a bad one. When finished, just pull the rope out.
