I had the same problem with my 1955 TEA20, I believe in my case the regulator was not working correctly and letting the coil draw power from the battery even when the key was switched off. Mine was a 12v generator system so I purchased a 12v selfregulating alternator from the wreckers and mounted it and cut the old regulator out of the circuit Problem apparently solved Mind you I"m only guessing. Fit a light of some kind in the wire from the battery that excites the alternator coil and and providing it draws enough power (not sure of the value) it will go out when it starts to charge. If you want to be really flash and non original you can fit an ameter
