I also used surplus cylinder for mine. Here are some thoughts- the ends for the upper link are different size (3/4 for Cat1) from the lower arms (7/8 for Cat1), so be sure to match the size for yours. For Cat1, the smallest cylinder to use would be 2 1/2 dia and anything much bigger will hit the ears for the implement and tractor end mount. I got lucky and found 10" stroke cylinder that would be as short with ends welded on and retracted as the original link was when retracted. Most cylinders will limit the stroke to about 8" or it will be too long when retracted. Adds a lot of lift travel to a boom pole. My ports were small aircraft fittings and I welded them shut and redrilled and tapped for 3/8 pipe size. Disassemble the cylinder when welding. Extend the rod fully to weld away from the seal and cover the rod to protect from splatter. I used 7018 electrodes. I have a MIG welder but did not trust that method for this item.
