I'll take a stab at this. I'll admit right up front that i've not owned one of todays compacts with a hydro. trans., and i'm told the current generation is said to be improved? I've only used older versions. Personally i like the "feel" of the solid "hook up" of the std. trans, and i like the huge $$ diff. too. (less) I all so like the way a std. trans. can be idled back when not pulling a load to go slow with the engine rpm at a fast idle. This means a lot less noise too, and better control with the gear trans.. The std. trans. puts out quite a bit more hp to the pto with the same engine hp over a hydro trans. too! Then there's the fact you can tow start a std. trans. if needed some day. The gear trans. is a proven reliable way of transmitting power that won't be changed in a year or two, so your chances of getting parts some day will be better. The gear trans. isn't controled by some wires/switches/connectors that can corode and give you fits when it's old! I love my Grass Hopper zero turn mower, but make "my" smaller tractor a syncronized gear trans. with a shuttle please! :) Robert
