Oil bath filters work on vaccum pulling air down the center tube with such a force that the dirt goes in the oil and settles to the bottom of the cup. The wire filter mesh is there to catch what ever dirt gets by the oil cup. Some oil gets splashed onto the wire filter mesh as the tractor is driven and this catches the dirt even more. Oil bath doesn't catch all the dirt, some still gets by. A dry filter catches even smaller particles down to about 5 microns, which is better cleaning. On the oil bath you change the oil to clean the dirt out of the bottom of the cup, replace the oil with the same type you use in the engine up to the fill line. You need to keep it to this level to properly clean the incomming air. If you keep the cup and wire screen mesh serviced you should not need to change to a dry filter unless you are in extrenely dusty conditions. If you are get a precleaner for the stack top.
