no.1 Oil baths work best at above idle speeds, which is where your tractor engine will be running most times. no.2 when the paper filters came out in the 50s it occured to a lot of mechanics that it was another after-sale item that the dealers could sell to the auto-truck-tractor owner, where they didn't get any second sales on the oil bath servicing. no.3 when the paper filters came out, in the 50s traffic was slowing down, and more car engines were running at idle half the time, and at idle the paper does a good job. As far as getting dirty, have scooped a lot of dirt out of the bottom of the oil bath tanks. And as to sucking oil into the engine, yes it will if it gets real dirty, Just the SAME as a paper filter that gets thoroughly plugged will split and tear and let straight dirt get sucked into the engine. And I've sure seen a lot of thoroughly plugged paper filters, especialy lately. I'd keep the oil bath if thats what came with it, save the knit picking for some other area of the tractor.
