OK,forget about the timing marks for a while.I havent worked on a Ford diesel,but maybe I can help.You might need to pull the number one injector if its in the head in a way you can get a wooden dowel rod into the cylinder on top of the piston.Slowly turn the engine over untill the dowel rod is all the way up,as you do this watch your valves,with the dowel rod coming up,your intake valves should be closing,or they should be closed just as its coming up,when the rod is all the way up,look for a timing mark on the vibration damper,or where ever it is for the crankshaft,it might be on the accesory drive if it has one,this is right after the intake closed.It sounds like you have it 180 out of time,if your intake is open and the piston is at the top of the stroke,its wrong no matter what the timing mark says.I'll think about this and write more in a few minutes.
