The proper way to use the tester is to turn it to VDC, connect one side to ground [+ or - depending on tractor] the other [hot] connects to the wire coming from the coil. With the timing mark aligned loosen the distributor and by turning you can see exactly when the points break. Points open will be 6 or 12 V and when closed will be 0. I have used this method for years and is easy. Hope this helps
