I think everyone would agree the auto trans is better than the joke of a 5-speed that could have been in the truck. The NV4500 in that vintage dudge had a problem with 5th gear coming loose from some shaft and not being able to run in 5th any more....I had a couple New Process 435's(what New Venture used to be called) in trucks before and wanted something that the synchro's would hold up better on....The ZF Ford uses DOES!
