I learned an expensive lesson on water pumps many years ago... I started buying cheap off-brand rebuilds to save a few bucks.... And they had a free replacement warranty.... but replacing the waterpump, antifreeze, and a hose or two every 10,000-15,000 miles got old. The cheap rebuilds use a really cheap mechanical face seal that only lasts a few thousand miles... The OEM pumps have a ceramic seal that lasts 100,000's of miles. As far as waterpump lube.... It doesn't hurt but probably doesn't help either. Like Ben says, It can't actually get to the bearing unless the seal goes bad.
