Hydraulic system air leak

Posted by David on August 05, 2002 at 16:57:16 from (80.5.130.71):

Last summer I got stuck with a Same 65 in which the hydraulic oil was going yellow after a few minutes use. I knew this was because of air getting into the system and that there had to be a leak on the suction side of the pump. After I'd stripped everything three times I "knew" the leak must be elsewhere (defying the laws of physics) and proceeded to take the whole hydraulic system to pieces changing seals and checking everything all without success. I'd given up and was putting it together to take to the dealer when it hit me that just maybe the vacuum switch that screws into the transmission filter housing was leaking. I took it out and put my thumb over the hole - no air in the oil anymore! I had checked it by blowing through it earlier but the leak was so small it wasn't detectable that way. Lessons for me were (a) these things fail (b) don't rule out the obvious even when you "know" it isn't that. I suppose it was even more obvious as I was working on it to repair the PTO clutch which had burnt out because it was getting no oil due to a clogged transmission filter. The high vacuum had obviously sucked the guts right out of the switch. It hadn't warned of a clogged filter before its death because the wire was off it. However, the owner knew it was clogged anyway as the power steering wasn't working but hadn't got round to doing anything about it. He didn't realise the damage it could do. (neither did I to be honest) However, as we say in Scotland -"We baith ken noo." - and so my friends, do you. Change those filters guys.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
