I am looking for some “sage advise” on the effects of switching oil in a tractor. I bought a 1960’s farmall about a 2 years ago. The tractor basically just got driven back/forth between pieces of property for storage until last fall. I decided to change the oil in the tractor and use it to brush hog. Although the tractor was from the 1960’s I wasn’t sure whether it had been run with detergent or non detergent oil so I put in 5 qts of non-detergent oil & a new filter. I used the tractor to brush hog an acre of land and then put it away for the winter. This summer when I got the tractor out to brush hog I notice it has started smoking really bad. I can’t tell whether it is a white or a blue smoke but it is quite thick and steady. Is it possible using non-detergent oil instead of detergent could cause this smoke? Also could using a cheap non detergent oil cause this smoke, even with only an hour or two of use? If it is blue smoke, any suggestions on how to get the tractor to quit smoking?
