We've been using 10w-30 universal in both engines and tranmissions of John Deere 2140, 2850, 1640, 2030 and Same 65 quite happily for a long number of years without any problem. Some of them were worked very hard too on a JD mower. These have oil immersed brakes and hydraulic clutches. However, things could be different with a MF168. My impression is that a low viscosity modern oil is generally ok (even if not recommended) in equipment that would normally have a thicker oil specified as it can get in anywhere it might be needed and the modern spec is generally capable of dealing with the likely mechanical pressures found there. Conversely, putting a thick oil into something that requires a low viscosity oil is asking for trouble - the thick oil just doesn't get into the places where it should go and so can't do its job at all. That's my theory anyway. Maybe someone would care to comment on this? I'm very willing to be educated if someone knows better.
