I hear your story. There is marks on that flywheel that you can find through that hole in the bell housing. I was like you and had trouble finding these marks. Your best bet is to take the valve cover off and slowly turn the engine over watching your rocker arms and valves. When intake valve closes on #1 cylinder the piston is at the bottom. Turn the hand cranke over just short of 1/2 turn. Then stick screwdriver or something in #1 spark plug hole. Then turn the engine over just a very little more tell that cylinder is clear to the top. Now you are at TDC. This would be a good time to see if you can actually find some timing marks on that flywheel. But even if you can't you can go ahead and time your spark since you are at top dead center.
