Just a bit of tire kicking type experience and a little research here, but this is what I learned.

They're pretty clever guys. Given where they're from ( India ) which limits what they've got to work with, they do a good job. They take old U.S. or Brit designs and build them in India, where labor is real, real cheap. The tractors are old IH's and they also built old Jeeps - honest to gosh Jeeps. Most of the bugs have been worked out of the designs a long time ago. So they're generally reliable.

The import office is in Tomball, Texas. They've only been here about 8 years, and the dealer network is a little sparse, and I imagine parts support is a little sparse as well -- it takes time to boat stuff over from India. They do offer 3 year warranties on some tractors. I guess your big downside is if they fold up their tent in Tomball and move back to Bombay -- which is difficult for anybody to predict. Even then, odds are some old IH parts would work.

Given all that, I'd say your odds are far better than with Belarus, certainly, or any other off the wall machine from Romania, or anywhere in Eastern Europe that doesn't have some big time backing somewhere -- like Czech Skoda cars owned by VW.

In the end, I decided to stick with my old JD's and not add to our tractor flock. But I gotta admit, the Mahindras were attractive compared to the new JD's. They say that pioneers only end up with a butt fulla arrows. In the case of Mahindra, I don't think you're really pioneering, but you may run into a deal where you break something and the part is in Madras India instead of Moline Illinois -- so you may be down for a month or two even if it's under warranty.

Caveat emptor and good luck

Steve

Today's Featured Article - Tuning-Up Your Tractor: Plugs & Compression Testing - by Curtis Von Fange. The engine seems to run rough. In the exhaust you can hear an occasion 'poofing' sound like somethings not firing on all cylinders. Under loaded conditions the tractor seems to lack power and it belches black smoke out of the exhaust. For some reason it just doesn't want to start up without cranking and cranking the starter. All these conditions can be signals that your unit is in need of a tune up. Ok, so what is involved in a tune up? You say, swap plugs and file the points....now tha ... [Read Article]
